Russell Tovey Is Thankful That He's Not "Really Effeminate"
star Russell Tovey might have some backtracking to do this week after a new interview published by the Guardian.
In it, Russell details his experience growing up gay and reveals that he\'s glad he\'s not "really effeminate."
“I feel like I could have been really effeminate, if I hadn’t gone to the school I went to. Where I felt like I had to toughen up,” he said. “If I’d have been able to relax, prance around, sing in the street, I might be a different person now. I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down that path. Because it’s probably given me the unique quality that people think I have.”
How did the actor\'s dad prevent him from going "down that path" to effeminacy? By refusing to allow him to go to theater school, where, you know, gay men learn to lisp and prance and let their wrists go limp. Russell says that because he\'s not effeminate, he\'s been able to have the acting career he\'s enjoyed.
I love you dearly Russell, but one only has to listen to you scream like a girl during your first werewolf transformation in Being Human to know that you were indeed whacked with the Sissy Stick at birth!
I completely get it. I sometimes wish I was more masculine mainly because I\'m attracted to masculine men who are typically also attracted to masculine men. Its not something that can be easily changed. I personally don\'t think he has any apologizing to do. He\'s being who he wants to be and he\'s thinking of his career before anything else and I can understand that. Who we should really be angry at is Hollywood and every business and company who don\'t hire people based on their sexuality so that people who are more obviously gay aren\'t made to feel inadequate for who they are
Are we all just looking to get our panties in a wad over the small stuff? I too am glad I\'m not "really effeminate". Life is even more difficult for effeminate guys. Saying you\'re glad you\'re not something isn\'t saying that that thing is bad. It\'s more of a commentary on the society we live in that effeminate men are teased and ridiculed more. I\'m glad I\'m not a female. I don\'t identify with being female and can\'t imaging being female, and I\'m glad I\'m not one. That doesn\'t make it bad to be female, does it? Just cause I\'m glad I\'m not? I\'m also glad I\'m not a muscle bear. Does that mean it\'s bad to be a muscle bear?
I agree with every word he (Russel) says!
You know when you look back at your 13-year-old self, and you realize how hard you were tryyyiing to fit in or impress others --even though, at the time, you just didn\'t realize how inauthentic you were being to your truest self. It all stems from immaturity, and insecurities, trying to give people something that you think THEY want, as opposed to you being who you authentically are. Sadly, when I see grown men act this way, I just see them as not having grown up much past age 13.
Even if Tovey had gone to theater school hey might have headed down that path but I think as he grew up, he would have had the the opportunity to choose the "Type" of gay he wanted to be. I know many people to include myself that did make a choice as to that type of gay they wanted to be. And for the record I want to have Russel Tovey\'s baby (or die tryin)! ;-)
The inner homophobia of the gay community is a shame. Proclaiming being effeminate is a bad thing, something you must avoid because you\'re going to be bullied is to embrace homophobia. Gays comes in different shapes and types and one is effeminate, like it or not. Embrace diversity, not homophobia, Russell.
Nothing Mr Tovey said, regarding his own life and experience, is in any way offensive. I too am very glad I wasn\'t any more effeminate than I am, it would have made things a million times harder than they already were, and it wasn\'t at all pleasant.
I agree with him. He very lucky to have grown up without being a "sissy". As I was called daily by neighbors and family! I would have given anything to have been more "masculine".
WHO CARES~? He is allowed his opinion just as much as the rest of us.
I think he is referring to his life as an actor -- admittedly, if he was overly effeminate, it would seriously limit his options professionally as casting directors would see him as a "type" as opposed to a character actor who could play a variety of roles. He would have to fight hard to be taken seriously for dramatic roles, or projects where he wasn\'t to play a flamboyant character. It may sound harsh, but it is the harsh reality of show business.
maybe he could have gone to theatre school and lear to be effeminate or even a better actor since he\'s as stiff as wood (and not the good sexual innuendo wood)
Needless bitching and so wrong. Obviously written from someone effeminate who has never seen Russel Tovey act. He is one of the best young actors around and wooden is not something you can throw at him unless your trying to score points. Really, the "He/she is so wooden" is now so over used it means nothing...it\'s just used to try and be nasty and rude to person concerned. Do us all a favour and never try to bitch again. It takes a certain queen to do it and you aren\'t her.
I am also thankful he\'s not effeminate! To each their own, and as long as you\'re not hurting anyone be who you are! Some guys like effeminate men, I, along with others here, do not! Not everyone needs to be their own parade! I\'m gay, and I like MEN, not guys that act like girls...if I wanted a girl, I would go get one. Bravo Russell for being brave enough to speak your feelings. I think he is beyond sexy just the way he is!
Seriously did he just say that? That fact that he needed to say that proves that he is not HAPPY with himself. LGBTQ community already has obstacles against them so why add to the fire when you\'re part of the community? I know straight guys who are effeminate and that does NOT make them gay. Congrats to you for being "BUTCH" if that\'s what you think you are. Just don\'t speak because your accent makes you effeminate. I did like you, but with this ignorant comment you made, you are right up there with the douche bags that keep this community down.
Eh? What? He\'s glad he\'s not effeminate therefore he\'s not happy being gay? Since when does being happy as a gay man equate to being effeminate? or \'happy gay man = effeminate\' for those liking equations. Tsk, seriously a happy gay man is one who accepts himself for being himself. Tovey is being himself. Many who are effeminate do it because they\'re told it\'s the done thing. Gay guys are except to change to stereotypes that fulfill sexual desires of others and consume tons of materialism from the commercial gay scene. Thankfully many are wise to that. Those who aren\'t...well you can tell those who aren\'t happy. As long as Massow doesn\'t get his claws into Tovey, Russell will be okay because Russell does have it all. I wish him well.
No matter the outward appearance, the fact that he likes sucking dick and slipping the odd one up his ass leads a lot of people to think he\'s effeminate. You know, six degrees of effeminacy?
Maybe he is hinting that he is a good actor, idk since i have never heard of him, because he has buried his true self for his entire life. I wont use the term effeminate, there are just simply many different types of people out there, and thank the universe for all that wonderful diversity.
I do not have a problem with his statement...I too am glad he is not effeminate..I like him the way he is...effeminate men ...if it makes them happy,I am happy for them...not all of us are the same ...thank God...it would be a very boring world...I am not attracted to effeminate men...some are...and I am happy for all who are happy with who and whom they are...no offense but we don\'t all need to swish down the street in high heels and a purse on our hip.
This \'actor \' should really concern himself with his work. He is snore and I can\'t watch the stupid boring show he \' stars \' on. What a sad try for some media attention.
Proving once again beauty comes from within
Don\'t think there is a need for "clarification"! I believe he was quite clear. Oh, wait, apparently you, "Instinct", feel that he should be that "stereotype". I say bravo, Russell! And good job, to his supportive dad.
