I would have liked to see Isabel and Alex get married, but for the final season, they had to have an outsider to the whole thing in order to have the suspense - will Jesse support his wife - we know that Alex would have no doubt - he was so in love with her. But alas Alex had to be killed off so that Colin Hanks could go onto doing something else.

Yes. I don't understand how or why, but Isabel loved Jesse more than she ever loved Alex and it seemed like she was never satisfied with what they had. So I fear Alex would have inevitably been ditched for Jesse.
