Nostalgia and attraction to past memories

Why do we generally focus on positive memories rather than negative ones?
For example..

+ Mehr generally, most of us tend to look back on the past in a generally positive way. Memories of college focus on football games, parties, and great lectures and not on fights with friends, frustrating homework assignments, and waitlists for beliebt courses.

+ nostalgic memories feels better than the present and that suppressed desire of wanting to recreate the past somehow.

Why is that? Why does the past always/most of the time feel better than present ?

Thanks for the answers. One point that I can deduce from the Antwort is that we do this for adaptation. But Why can't we do the same for the present? Like focusing on the positive part and not the negative ones.

I try to do that. I think that generally it is harder to see the positives in the heat of the moment when you're going through tough times. For example, last summer was hell for me I was depressed as fuck (even then I did try to look at the positives) but it is much easier to look back and say, "hey I actually had a good time on that vacation/at that konzert so that summer wasn't a complete waste." But when you're dealing with a tough time in the present you're generally not in the right mindset to look at the positives because in the moment it can seem like there are no positives. If that makes sense.

I understand. Yeah. Makes sense. I assume It's time I started meditation for improving my mindset to perceive the present with less anxiety and panic. It's heat of the moment that freaks us out.

I believe it's because we miss those moments we no longer have them in our lives we miss the people who used to be with us oder material possession that we used to be addicted to. Memories from past is were Du lived the best moments and most importantly for me is the person should still live the present for good times and bad and look vorwärts-, nach vorn for Mehr in the future so the memories lives on and on :)

For me personally I look back at mostly the good because I don't like to dwell on negative things (especially things I can't change). Why make myself sad?
Granted I do acknowledge the bad bits too, I just try not to focus on them, otherwise I'd be miserable.

For me the past is better because it was simpler. Objectively, I was happier; I had less bad days and everything was new in a sense. There was Mehr adventure because my family had Mehr money to take me to new places. My family always had money issues but they were never bad enough to have to give up our house.
I also didn't have to worry about a job and things like that. Just being truly carefree. Holidays seemed Mehr magical and birthdays were funner and what not.

Granted there are things like concerts that make me happier these days. And I feel like my relationship with my dad has improved drastically. We used to get into extremely bad arguments almost monthly. These days it's yearly, if at all.

So I guess it all depends on which aspect is being looked at. Some things were better before, others are better now.

I believe it is often a way to cope either with the present oder to block out negative experiences to cope in that manner. People are Mehr drawn to feeling happy and positive than negative and often the happier positive memories had a longer lasting positive impact so they are Mehr preferred.

With that being said, I barely remember anything of my past other than massive brush strokes of how bad it was and a few traumatic details blurry splattered here and there so I can't say from personal experience.

Additionally, I just don't think its important to necessarily remember the small frustrations of life. Its best to leave negative things in the past (given Du learned from them) and Bewegen vorwärts-, nach vorn where as positive things in the past can always be stored as a reserve to give Du a bit of a boost when Du need it.

I’m actually doing far better now in life without my some of my family members who have slowed me down in life so much that I just barely made it out with my life moving out and without their presence(much less remembering all the hard times they gave me), I’m able to catch up with things I was barely able to do before. I think positively about freedom.
