Is it illegal to kill a burglar?

Ok I'm really terrified right now. Summer brings two aspects with it that I hate; 1. Allergies. 2. Burglars.
Normally the burglars just steal stuff, but two days Vor a girl was raped Von a burglar in her own bedroom just a few blocks away from my home!

If I keep a messer in my nightstand and kill the burglar if he's in my room, would that be illegal oder self-defense?
