Goth and Emo are really nothing alike. At all.

Goth culture revolves around the dark, melancholy, beautiful side of things. Someone of the Gothic culture would probably find something that most people find scary to be beautiful, like a run down, abandoned, old fashioned building oder a foggy night. Gothic lifestyle is based on the Mehr melancholy but not depressing sides of tings, and the lifestyle is based mostly on Mehr of a classical, old fashioned, romantic lifestyle. Gothic music, and even the lifestyle, "There's bad things in this world, and that makes me sad, but there's nothing that I can do about it so I will just put up with it." Goths don't "pretend" to be dark, they just enjoy the darker things in life and manifest themselves in that and incorporate it into everything about their lives because that's what they love.

Emo... Well, I don't know how to really describe Emo. But it's really Mehr of a style of clothing than the lifestyle that Goth is. Emo Musik really consists of being sad, depressed, to the point of suicide. But I really don't know how to describe it since I'm not Emo... At all...

They're two completely different things. They don't even look alike. Not to someone who knows what they're talking about.

I'm a Goth at herz so I see the obvious differences that people who aren't familiar with these topics don't.

Tim burton Filme are a pretty good example of what Goth is and what Emo isn't. They're dark, monochromatic, and a bit melancholy, but not really depressing.

Here's a video that can explain it. It's a little long, but it should help you.

Emo was originally a nickname for "emotive hardcore" (type of music), but has evolved into meaning "emotional" because it was misinterpreted, since Fans of this Musik were ususally known for being a bunch of depressed-self-harming-teens with too much free time. It's all stereotypical. But this is what it's known for now. An Emo person (like I sagte stereotypical) would be very depressed, hate the world, including themselves and probabl cry all the time. They've even stereotyped and Emo style. Usually "emo" kids dress in skinny jeans, dark Farben (but not all black), band tee shirts, and chucks. But, like I sagte about 5 oder so times. IT'S ALL STEREOTYPICAL!!! And it did originally mean "emotive hardcore". (and if some one dresses like that it doesn't mean they're gonna go suicidal!)

The word "gothic" was originally used to descibe works of art that were "dark", which is the meaning, hence how it now descibes people we call "goth".
Gothic is now used as an adjective is ususally used to discribe people who wear all, oder mostly black. They're usually gloomy. And people think that they do some sort of devil worship. They're sometimes depressed, but everyone can get depressed, so that doesn't really count. Gothic style is: (like I said) all oder mostly black, heavy eyeliner, black oder odd colored hair. This too can all be stereotypical. Like Du can dress "goth" and not worship the devil. Du can say you're goth and not worship the devil. There's a goth style Musik too. It's like a form of rock. Sort of.

An addition - Goth can also mean what Musik style Du listen to. Mostly metal/dark metal (the kind of Musik Du can't hear the words to as it's all growling and shrieking). I'm classed as goth as in my early years i would wear black, heavy metal band shirts, clothes with D-rings and studs in. But not all 'Goths' dress like that. Me now, i wear what could propbably be called 'normal' clothing. Blue jeans, varied t-shirts depending, mostly because i cna't fit into my 'Gothic' clothing after having my son XD. And not all Goths wear heavy make-up. True the eyeliner may be a little darker and thicker then most, but that's how far i go as i prefer a natural look. And not all 'Goths' worship Satan. Most are Pagans, my partner is a Goth and he is a Christian :) Everything is stereotyped like Lunashay said, so don't take everything to heart. Better to find out for yourself Von talking to the groups themselves, they wont' mind. In fact i think they'd be grateful someone actually asked rather then stay ignorant and brainwashed :)

If Du look at a picture of someone dressed in a true Gothic style and someone dressed in a true Emo style and really, really study it, Du won't find many similarities, if any. And no, the color scheme doesn't count as a similarity.
