That's had to say. Sometimes multiple personalities could be formed from lack of contact and an overactive imagination. And in other cases, an individual could fabricate another identity during times of stress, surrenduring control and awarness when he/she cannot handle the situation. A split personality (or alter) is sometimes created(intentionally, or without awarness) to act out an urge that that person feels as if he/she cannot do.

A good example of these possible theories is in the Stephen King book/film Secret Window.

Well, I agree with researchers that say it exists primarily as an iatrogenic adverse effect of therapy. For me that's plausible.

From what I've researched it seems real. It's rare but it does seem like an actual disorder which effects some people's minds.
