1treehillfan, I see where you're coming from. but leyton's love hasn't faded one bit when they hadn't seen each other in 3 years. They could barely stay apart in s5. brucas were broken up for only 6 episodes and they couldn't rekindle what they had in the beginning of s3. They didn't just decide that they didn't have an epic love story judging from the 408 date alone. They decided that it wasn't their relationship period. Don't you think they would have acknowledged that they once had what whitey described if they did once have that? I do believe they were in love in s3, but not the kind of love whitey described. brucas mutually agreed on that.

and remember, brooke never broke up with luke because of peyton right? Brooke wanted more than luke could offer her (see 4.01 dialogue). so if brooke just carried on with her mediocre relationship with luke at that point, they wouldn't have gone strong, but extremely weak & sower - and probably miserable. By 4.01, brooke had come to terms with just what their relationship was: they would go days without a meaningful conversation, luke barely called her, & he never let her all the way in. Luke barely knew brooke (sophia said it herself in the 3.22 commentary). Their relationship had gone sower long before brucas realized/would admit it. I think the whole keeping the library kiss a secret catalyzed brooke's insecurities into overload cause at that point she felt like she was already hanging on for dear life. Her insecurities about leyton put her over the edge by 3.22 (remember; peyton was an entity; not the cause. if it wasn't the library kiss, it would have been something else in s4 - luke just didn't treat her the way he treated peyton cause brooke wasn't the one). I think brooke then came to terms that her and luke's relationship was not what she wanted; was not what she deserved. Brooke ended things cause she knew she deserved better. not because of circumstances like leyton. I know brucas wouldn't have been "happy" if they stuck it through to the end of s4 (cause brooke knew she wasn't meant to be with luke; that's what broke her heart; that's what made her bitter toward peyton for a good while).
