We Saw the Opening of ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ and It Rocked
is following up one of the biggest movies of all time. The sequel has a lot to live up to in the eyes of many fans. But, even those who weren’t crazy about the previous film should get excited about this newest installment. We got to screen the opening scene from
The movie starts with a deep-sea submersible coasting along in the dark water. Turns out that the two pilots inside are heading for the giant tank of Jurassic World where the Mosasaurus was held. It’s been a long time since the events of
as one of the pilots says, “Anything in here would be dead by now.” That’s what he thinks.
Turns out these guys are there to steal a piece of the Indominus rex‘s skeleton. They find the remains of the dinosaur and chop off one of its bones. As they attach the bone to a balloon, the camera pans up and lightning flashes above the surface of the water. And for one brief second, we see an enormous shadow. Looks like everything isn’t dead after all.
We then see a team of operatives on land inside the park. One of them is operating the doors to the tank. He tells the two pilots to get out of there. We cut back to the sub and see a giant eye open up in front of the plexiglass cockpit. The lights on the pod disappear. The gate operator tells them he has to close the gate and leave. As the tablet he’s using to operate the gate boots up, we cut to a helicopter with the other team members shouting at the gate operator to run. In the bushes behind him is the T. rex.
The gate operator drops the tablet and the T. rex smashes it with its giant foot. This causes the tank gate to stay open. Uh-oh. The helicopter takes off and the soldiers onboard drop a ladder to the gate operator. He snags the ladder and barely escapes the jaws of the T. rex. Everyone cheers! And then the Mosasaurus leaps out of the ocean and chomps down on the entire ladder.
Director J.A. Bayona is showcasing some serious talent in this opening scene. It’s a dark and rainy setting that Bayona takes full advantage of. The dinosaurs are kept to the shadows and slowly revealed throughout the sequence. Even though we’ve become so accustomed to these creatures on the big screen, Bayona still makes them feel terrifying and wonderful.
, this opening scene was very reassuring that the sequel is getting back to the scarier roots of the original
. The darker visual look of the film and the commitment to making the dinosaurs scary again makes
hits theaters on June 6 in the UK, June 21 in Australia, and June 22 in the US.
