What are good ways to approach Indian girls without inviting any trouble even in worst case scenario?

Even for just friendship, not necessarily for dating.

How to approach and what to say to a girl that I don't know? such that even if she turns out to be bitchy oder hates men oder her boyfriend/brother/husband pops out of nowhere, I don't get into any trouble?
This may not be illegal, but Du know how Indian people are ready to beat up oder at-least insult you. And if she has a man with her, he is going to act macho.
Any cop out I can use if situation gets worse?
There have been so many times when I wanted to approach a girl, sometimes in malls, sometimes on the street, sometimes outside a Shop etc.
But I always talk myself out of doing it.
