Filming is about to begin for the eighth and final season! As we witness the starring cast convene in Belfast for the read-through and rehearsals, we keep hearing about the

production is willing to go to in order to avoid leaks. So, in a related fun story, we get into just how far the company in charge of security may go; including the use of birds of prey to take down snooping drones!

The season eight read-through has taken all the cast to Belfast, where many of them have been seen — though, curiously, it appears that selfies are not allowed this time. Nevertheless, along with the sightings there are photos as well, with Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, John Bradley, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Kristofer Hivju, Iain Glen, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Jacob Anderson, Ben Crompton (Edd is back!) and, next to Nikolaj, someone who looks very much like Pilou Asbæk:

The read-through with the entire cast ends today. The rest of this week will be used for initial rehearsals with two directors before filming begins, at last, in mid-October.

Edd is back! 😀 That´s Pilou, in his latest instragam pics he has the same haistyle and look.

I’m a person who doesn’t want to be “spoiled” though a person has some responsibility to avoid spoilers. I sometimes (not all the time – I do have chores to do etc etc) have watched GoT reaction videos you know those recommendations you get from YouTube – well one popped up with Viserion breathing blue flames, so I was partially “spoiled” although I didn’t click on the thumbnail to find out the whole story of the episode. If the people making the show are going to such extreme lengths to avoid spying maybe it’s as well there is only one season of GoT left. I tried to post something in the forums a few days ago linking to videos (nothing to do with me so I had no vested interest) about learning to speak English like the cast of GoT. I’m a bit late to the party but I remember some people had problems with Casterly Rock (or the castle chosen for it) – I didn’t mind the castle chosen but I am linking to a video by an Australian YouTuber who deemed it a fail.

Now I haven’t been to Spain for decades but I looked online (oh, the wonders of the internet) to see if I could find a Spanish castle which might suit. The Alcazar de Segovia looked pretty impressive https://www.exploring-castles.com/europe/spain/alcazar_de_segovia/ though one can’t really tell 100% from photographs. Are there any Spanish readers here who have an opinion? From what I read it is used as a military school so it might have been difficult to get permission for filming to be honest.

It makes me happy and more than a little nostalgic to see all of the cast converging back in Belfast for … sigh … one last ride. Particularly happy to see Ben Crompton among them as well. I’d didn’t exactly doubt that Edd would return for the final season, but unless it’s just for an early season cameo, this gives me some hope that he may make his way down south from the Wall – along with Beric and Tormund – to join up with the fighters at Winterfell.

Practicality questions aside, I hope that the reports of anti-drone eagles potentially being deployed turn out to be true if for no other reason than anti-drone eagles sound totally badass. Honestly, they sound like something that would fit perfectly in the Game of Thrones universe … Anti-raven eagles?

I would have thought so but I saw an episode of Mythbusters where they tested the danger of drone blades of several models. If I remember correctly standard blades aren’t sharp and either bend or stop when there’s resistance. They had to modify blades/drones to break skin in other words. There are several YouTube vids of eagles taking down drones without any apparent harm.

2. On another note: Would you happen to know how “table reads” are conducted? Does the entire cast sit around a big table throughout the two-day session? Or do the actresses and actors only participate in the read-throughs of the particular scenes in which they appear?

For instance, Ben Crompton is in Belfast. I can’t imagine that he’d be in most of the scenes in all six episodes, unless… Season 8, Episode 1 begins with the stunning cold open of Lord Commander Doloures Edd drawing a flaming sword from a fire, confirming speculation that he is indeed Azor Ahai.

The eagles are trained to bring the drone safely back to their handler. I wonder though, when someone is using a drone for overhead filming, if it’s a live feed or only recorded footage.

A Belgian comic book series used that as the title for one of their latest issues, actually.

Until it’s proven otherwise I’m going to believe that Gendry returned to Dragonstone with the rest of them and remained there while the group went to KL. His identity/appearance is unknown to Cersei and those that would kill him so bringing him with would have been unwise. I’d say Sandor also returned to Dragonstone from KL with those he arrived with. I doubt he went off on his own if he’s to remain in the story so the options are limited. So, either that or decided to travel with Brienne and Pod back to Winterfell… Perhaps they all went with the crew back to Dragonstone since they’re all now part of one “army.”

I think Tormund and Beric are going to walk the Wall to Castle Black. The NK didn’t seem concerned with them so they should be safe to do that.

As far as I see it, the most logical options for what happened to Gendry after we last saw him telling Davos to send a raven are, in no particular order:

1 – He remained at Eastwatch, but wasn’t up top with Tormund and Beric when the Night King appeared, so we didn’t see him.

2 – When Team Targ left Eastwatch, Gendry proceeded to Castle Black to drop off some dragonglass weapons forged on Dragonstone. Not mentioned, but a logical proposition given that Castle Black is the main stronghold of the Night’s Watch. They need such weapons, particularly given that Jon returned from Hardhome without those Sam found at the Fist of the First Men.

3 – Davos’s original intent was for Gendry to go to Winterfell; he was diverted from this intention when he asked Jon to take him along on the mission beyond the Wall. It isn’t impossible that Davos subsequently sent Gendry on to Winterfell while everyone else (save Tormund and Beric) returned south. Given that Gendry’s identity probably isn’t something Davos and Jon want widely known, it would make sense to get him out of the way.

4 – It also isn’t impossible that Gendry was tasked with both options 2 and 3. A trip to Castle Black to drop off some weapons and then on to Winterfell. This could explain why Gendry hasn’t reached Winterfell in the time it has taken for Jon to get as far south as King’s Landing and return to Dragonstone to send the raven confirming his imminent journey back to Winterfell.

5 – Gendry returned south with Davos and Jon but wasn’t present at the Dragonpit meeting. He either remained on the ship or was at Dragonstone (perhaps helping forge weapons from the last of the dragonglass?) while the meeting took place and is aboard the ship heading back north. If this is the case, Davos has most likely merged him in with the rest of the Northmen who accompanied Jon south from Winterfell.

Yep, I agree. As I interpreted that scene, they were running in a westerly direction (i.e. in the direction of Castle Black). Looked like they were running along the top of the wall when a section fell down behind them?

Jon intended to provide dragonglass weapons to the entire North, so, it’s legit to assume that he brought what he had to Eastwatch and then send some of his men to deliver dragonglass to The Last Hearth, Carhold, and finally Winterfell. Gendry may be in this dragoonglass delivery team, too.

That’s where he was supposed to be going anyway, before he volunteered for the suicide mission. It makes sense that he would head on from Eastwatch to Winterfell once the mission was over.

He’s Robert Baratheon’s son. Keeping him in Dany’s immediate proximity would be an unnecessary and idiotic risk.

I suppose early next season they could reveal that Jon told Dany off-screen who he is and she’s got no beef with Gendry. After Season 7 I wouldn’t put it past them to be that lazy with the writing.

But Jon keeping a few secrets from Dany maintains some semblance of intrigue and potential drama.

I don’t want a show where everything is conveniently glossed over and tied up into neat bows.

I agree. He’s needed at Winterfell, Northern HQ, for his smithing skills alone. I suspect he rode south from Eastwatch with a few red shirts and the dragonglass about the time Jon, Dany, Biff, Sandor et al were heading to KL and the Dragon Pit. Maybe D&D will grace us with a scene where Arya’s in the courtyard when the Eastwatch contingent arrive and gets a surprise and joyous reunion with her old soul-mate. Arya can’t

tell Sansa as she’s in charge. But Sansa probably will pay no mind to a mere blacksmith unless it comes out he’s also the King’s bastard.

I don’t think Sansa and Gendry have ever met. When would Sansa ever stroll down the Street of Steel? Arya knows Gendry (of course) and knows that he’s somehow very important; Brienne has recognized Gendry as one of Robert’s offspring. And we presume she’s headed back to Winterfell to report to defacto QitN Lady Sansa, so they all could meet. (Yay!)

However, having (illegitimate) Baratheon blood no longer seems to be the key to success in Westeros, with at least a couple of actual legitimate Targaryens running (and flying) around. Possible “heir” to the Usurper? That, and a few coppers will get ya a bowl of brown in Flea Alley. Plus a dagger in the kidneys.

I meant that Sansa would possibly be let in on Gendry’s identity because she’s a Stark and Lady of Winterfell, not that she’s already aware. And he’ll surely tell Arya the truth. Oh, and Bran will probably work it out himself if he doesn’t know already.

It may be politically prudent for all of the Starks to know the truth about him since, should he ever be legitimised or his claim to the Stormlands or even the Iron Throne need to be pursued for any reason, then having good relationships with and support from the Starks would be a benefit.

Old habits die hard. The Allies have two wars to fight in six episodes, IMO leaving no room for melodrama. But can D&D resist a cliche? Only some fly on a wall in Belfast knows for sure.

We already had Sansa vs. Jon. Then Sansa vs. Arya. Neither of those conflicts were among my favorite story lines.

I thought (hoped?) Sansa and Arya’s lovely reconciliation scene at the end of S7e7 meant they’d listened to their father’s words to protect and look after one another. I was looking forward to the sisters working together as a Dynamic Duo next season. No catfights over Robert 2.0, please?

I figure there’s going to be enough tension with weasels like Lord Glover when Jon shows up with a “foreign whore” and tells them, “Here’s my new girlfriend. Cute, huh? Oh, and one other thing. I bent the knee – among other things. She’s your Queen now.”

Season 8 will have More CGI oeration than the rest seasons which means 60-75% indoor shootings i don’t belive we will enjoy spoiler pictures like before

Oh, ye gods I hope they made it out. Tormund’s interactions with any other character are always hilarious, and lighten up much of the depressing stuff. He’s a master at elevating even the most simple remark to something that brings a smile. Just look at what he did with a simple script instruction to “give Brienne a look.” It wasn’t meant to be anything special at all in the script, yet, the way he did it took the world by storm and blossomed into that hilarious conversation with the Hound this season. “Ah, you do know her.” It would be a shame to lose him – I see him making it all the way through, becoming a statesman for the surviving Wildings, and a life-long friend to whichever of the other characters make it to the end.

I don’t have that same optimism for Beric. I think Thoros dying was a portent of doom for Beric, and he will go to his death doing something remarkably brave to ensure the survival of the others.

More on topic: it’s so great to see the full cast amassing in Belfast. As much as I don’t want the security to be breached too much, other off-seasons were brightened by some amazing sleuth work by our intrepid WotW fans catching sight of cast members around town. I remember the utmost relief in the off-season after Jon was killed at seeing pics of him filming. But drone-destroying eagles? Like someone said, that would be worth watching. That would be really funny. I imagine there will be fans out there busy designing eagle-proof drones, or some such thing.

I am ok with this level of spoiler (Edd and Tormund returning) because it’s not a major surprise and can leave us guessing about what will happen however I’m avoiding any major plot spoilers from here on in.

For what it’s I’m guessing Tormund dies in episode 1 and Edd and what remains of the Nights watch follow shortly after at the hands of the undead army but of course it’s possible Edd makes it to support Jon and informs him of the wall falling.

Nope, nope, not Tormund. I’m basing my prediction mostly on hope, because it didn’t look to me that either Tormund or Beric made it out of the avalanche. I was searching my poor befuddled mind for a way that it could turn out that they weren’t now popsicles, and came up with this: it is said that Bran can see the future as well as the past and present. The last scene before the fall of the Wall was Bran going into a trance. Is it possible that the Wall hasn’t really fallen yet, and Bran still has time to warn everybody? Maybe?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if something so momentous as the Wall falling could be heard throughout the North? After all, there was magic in the making of the Wall. James Hibberd strongly hinted on twitter that this was the case but also hinted he may not make it out of that the first episode.

That could be a good possibility from Last Hearth anyway. One would think that much ice falling would sound like an explosion and feel like an earthquake.

I don’t know when that is but I think that’s pretty cool. With as long as they’re planning for production I don’t think days or a week or so will make much difference.

Bran wasn’t going into a trance; it wasn’t a greensight vision. Bran was warging on ravens. He was seeing the Wall fall in real time, through the ravens’ eyes.

I also think that Gendry may turn up at Winterfell with a delivery of dragonglass. I’m really looking forward to a reunion with Arya!

any dragonglass. It’s obsidian, volcanic glass, very hard and brittle. It’s knapped like stone to fashion weapons, not forged like steel and other metals. He could, of course, help with making handles for axes or something, but I’m not sure how skilled he’d be at making arrows, which to me seem the best weapon. Unless a fan theory turns out to be true and Valyrian steel is made by forging ordinary steel with obsidian in the heat of a dragon’s fire… hmm… But there’s also another theory that making Valyrian steel requires a blood sacrafice… So will Arya get “nissa-nissaed” by Gendry to produce Valyrian steel, yikes! (No, I don’t think that will happen, just following a stray train of thought to its conclusion.)

For a few moments while watching the finale I thought Tormund perished and nearly went into meltdown. But then I refused to believe he’s dead and realised he wasn’t necessarily on the part of the Wall that collapsed.

Thronetender‘s idea of Tormund surviving the war and becoming an elder statesman for the Wildlings. That’s pretty much what I envisioned for him in my wish-fulfilment speculation/fantasy after season 4/book 5.

Oh, and one character meet-up I’d love to see is Tormund and Jaime! With or without Brienne present.

Yes that should be a great thing to take a break for Kit’s wedding and also there might be another wedding in the show if Dany is pregnant, i definitely she Jon marrying her if they can have time to get that in the show, so Kit might have a real wedding and a character wedding during this time period.

If it hasn’t been mentioned…While Googling “GoT news” I just saw articles saying that production will pause so the cast can all attend the wedding of Kit & Rose.I don’t know when that is but I think that’s pretty cool.With as long as they’re planning for production I don’t think days or a week or so will make much difference.

It’d be lovely if Kit and Rose can have their friends and co-workers on GoT attend their wedding. So, apparently GoT production will take a few days off for the wedding… And then get back to work. So much for a honeymoon, Kit! lol!

I think what exactly happens depends on the type of production and scale of it, as well as the number of actors involved. I imagine in a two-hander, theatre production the line between read-through and blocking might be slightly blurred. With this production it sounds like things might be more discrete. Pilou Asbeck said that he played the Dragon Pit scene as written and didn’t know that Cersei would be saying later that he was on his way to Essos for the Golden Company. With the security and leaks etc. the actors might only get copies of their scripted scenes and be grouped accordingly on the read through. I suspect blocking would come later as it involves all the tech side as well as the actors and of course they have to learn their lines in between.

It’s not clear where Gendry might be but I think he would’ve left Eastwatch with Ser Davos. If they omit showing them travelling to Winterfell then I think he will arrivethere with the others.

It’s easy to miss but if I haven’t got my scenes confused then we see two or three of the ravens with the white eyeballs. Warging into multiple creatures was part of Bran’s progression this season.

Kit + Rose wedding will be a bigger news story than Prince William + Kate Middleton! I remenber all the hoopla surrounding the royal wedding back in 2011; I had even recorded it to watch the next day because of the time difference, but never did because it was drowned out by a bigger story the day after that. I hope Jon Snow and Ygritte – I mean Kit Harington and Rose Leslie – announce that they’ve arranged for photographers for official wedding photographs to sate the public. talvikorppi: BTW, Gendry won’t be forging any dragonglass. It’s obsidian, volcanic glass, very hard and brittle. It’s knapped like stone to fashion weapons, not forged like steel and other metals. He could, of course, help with making handles for axes or something, but I’m not sure how skilled he’d be at making arrows, which to me seem the best weapon.

You are correct, my bad. I should know that, too, with as many Discovery programs I’ve watched about how old weapons were produced. I’ve seen scenes of obsidian being knapped, flaked. That’s what I get for writing in the middle of the night. But still, I think Gendry went to Winterfell. That’s the plan Davos had for him originally.

IMO, if Kit & Rose agreed on that, there would be plenty of TV companies ready to broadcast their wedding live (and they wouldn’t be short of watchers). But their private life is not a show, so I hope that the fandom will show a due respect to their privacy. However, I would be happy, if WOTW could think of something how we could send our best wishes to the happy couple ir a respectful way.
