Nutter takes the Directors Guild Award, while Headey charms on NPR 

Directors Guild of America Awards were announced last night in Los Angeles, and

Director David Nutter won the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series for his work on the

eason 5 finale, “Mother’s Mercy.” He was nominated five times previously, including once for the

 Red Wedding episode, “The Rains of Castamere.”

Nutter also won the 2015 Directing Emmy Award for “Mother’s Mercy.”

The episode was packed with huge moments, handled ably by Nutter: Cersei’s Walk of Atonement, Arya crossing Meryn Trant off her list and going blind, Daenerys encountering a Dothraki khalasar, Sansa and Theon’s escape, Myrcella’s death by kiss and Jon’s fatal ‘For the Watch’ scene.

Unless you are a rabid fan like us… you probably don’t read EVERY article or news piece on each scene or show.. but, the fact that body doubles are most often used in nude scenes, should be fairly common knowledge in todays world. Either way it was effective. The body double was close enough to her physique that it worked.

I was commenting on what I heard in the interview. She was asked if she actually had to do the walk (“That was a very long sequence. Now, first of all, did you actually have to do that?”) and she answered that contrary to popular belief, she was actually there, doing the whole thing but not naked.

I loved all of Lena’s NPR interview, but I found it particularly prophetic that they closed with Queen’s, “She’s a killer … queen; gunpowder, gelatine; dynamite with a laser beam; guaranteed to blow your mind….” Now we know how wildfire is made.

I’m truly happy for David Nutter, but I do have one question. Why was this episode, directorially speaking, better than “Hardhome”? This is a serious question without judgment, by the way, but I genuinely want to understand. I don’t know enough to be able to separate overall episode quality from director quality. “Hardhome” got 9.9 of 10 on IMDb while “Mother’s Mercy” received only an 8.6. So I don’t think I’m not alone when considering “Hardhome” to be the better episode by a significant and perhaps phenomenal margin. So what makes “Mother’s Mercy” better from a director’s perspective?

But the competition for The Drama category is really good, can’t wait.

I definitely think you’re right that the Stanninites influenced the score and that other loose ends further drove down the score, but I don’t imagine that accounts for the full difference. A tenth of a point from perfection is hard to beat.

Mother’s Mercy is a weird one for me: I like every single scene of this episode but somehow the episode just doesn’t work for me as a whole. I can’t really pin the reason for this down (it may have something to do with the cliffhangers).

Do we usually get an announcement about the trailer release date? If yes, tonight would be quite a good time to announce the date as next Sunday with a short preview. Though I really really hope we get trailer tonight. And I’m so happy about GOT winning all these awards, they really deserve it.

Only remember last year as announcing trailer date and that was because they showed it with IMAX event – but you never know. I really don’t think we will hear anything til next week at the earliest tho.

Yes. That’s why ratings are not reliable these days. 1-5 are all negative grades but if someone doesn’t like an episode/movie, they automaticly give it 1. I never rated GoT episode lower than 7 because the acting and visulas are good enough on its own.

I remember Mother’s Mercy getting vast amount of 1 star ratings on Westeros.org. I gave it 10 because for me, it was one of the few non-battle episodes where every single scene was exciting on its own.

Someone asked in the other thread, and yes, I think IMDB is that bad. The lack of moderation allows trolling to run rampant. (Shout out to Sue, by the way, for putting in the time and effort here.)

GoT website ratings are also specious. People who have read the books are often rating based on what they expected to see rather than if what they saw was good or not good. Even the worst episode of GoT should never get the lowest rating based on acting, production quality, music and cinematography. Instead, people rate based on “did it meet my vision and expectations having read the book.”

As to a trailer, I wish, but I have no hope. Next week with the Vinyl debut seems to make the most sense. Then again, HBO could surprise me. And I will periodically whip out my phone to refresh this site looking for an update. I am pathetic.

Here’s a fan-made trailer for S6 I found today. It’s not the real thing, but maybe it helps you to bear the wait just a little bit easier.

Can any American explain to me how do they show trailers during superbowl? I’m European so the big thing here is obviously what we call Football, or soccer to you. I have no idea how these american football matches work. Do they show the trailers during break? or at the end?

I’ve given a pass to the 4872 hours of pre-Super Bowl coverage. In the playoffs I was Team Not-the-Patriots. So at this point, I’m struggling to care. I’ll watch the game once it starts, but not with any particular enthusiasm.

I don’t think HBO needs to waste the money on a Super Bowl ad. The show has enough of a following that it’s just not necessary. The trailer is going to have enough views once it’s uploaded to YouTube. HBO doesn’t get any marketing benefit from that ad buy.

On the other hand, ESPN got a boost on it’s MNF football coverage for having the SW: TFA trailer air, and they hyped the fuck out of that. But that was SW pulling viewers into MNF. The Super Bowl doesn’t need GoT to pull in viewers and GoT doesn’t need the Super Bowl to reach it’s trailer audience.

A twenty second teaser during the pre-coverage might be cheaper and easier though…but like MNF/TFA stuff, the channel would be hyping it already. “And coming up, the latest teaser for GoT Season Six!” Said before every commercial break for about two hours before they show it.

That is there to be certain, but given how well IMDB scores do at predicting the success of movie sequels, the signal tends to swamp out the noise.

American football has breaks constantly. So you don’t have 45 minutes of continuous play. Acutal NFL football game time totals 60 minutes plus a 15 (in the case of the Super Bowl, 20) minute half time. The actual time a game lasts close to three hours because of all of the time outs, commercial breaks, instant replay reviews, etc.

Yes, they specifically stop play and stop the game clock to show commercials. No matter how stupid that sounds.

For every minute of football, there are 2 minutes of commercials on the Super Bowl. That is an exaggeration, of course, but not much of one. Companies shell out huge amounts of money to get ads on during the Super Bowl, too.

Obviously, there will not be anything for Thrones: the only TV shows advertised in the Super Bowl are midseason replacements on the network televising the game. Cable series would never be advertised there: the amount a network would charge to advertise rival networks fare would be astronomical: and these already are the most expensive commercial slots that exist. Besides, even if HBO was charged “only” what movie studios are charged, why would they spend so much advertising for a show with an established audience?

There is one commercial, I must admit, I seek out every year, and that’s the Budweiser Commercial with the Clydesdales. I don’t really drink beer, and if I did, it sure as shit wouldn’t be Budweiser, but I love those commercials, and I have since I was a kid. Fortunately, we have the internet, now, so I don’t have to watch tv to see it.

Hoping for a Game of Thrones commercial at this point is like hoping that the Chicago Bears will be in the game. What commercials are being aired was determined a while ago, and it’s known what those commercials will be. There are lists out there somewhere, and evidently you can even get the roster so that you’ll know the order in which they’ll air. If there were a Game of Thrones commercial, then the people running this site would have been tipped off about it a while ago.

David took a break from the show this season but most probably he’ll be back for season 7. he’s a very talented director, huge congratulations.

The show is generally good at finding the perfect music to finish a segment. That one was especially wonderful. (I loved when she is asked what would happen to you if you told us something. She answered, its not what would happen to m e, its what would happen to you….

Wow.That woman has a serious set of pipes.I may never listen to any of her music, but I cannot discount her as a singer.I had no idea she was that talented.It’s good to know someone who gets so much attention has so much talent.

She is amazing. She will be doing the tribute to David Bowie at the Grammy awards this year, I can’t imagine anyone better.

And the only reason I get happy for her is because normally she is the type I can’t stand, but she won me over. LOL.

Looking forward to her Bowie tribute. I have always respected her as an artist- I just don’t go for her musik. She is so talented though. Her live playing and vocal work is always tops. I also like her duets with Bennett.

Yeah, the fact that she can play as well as sing is something I admire – I played the piano for years but had a lot of trouble focusing on singing while playing!

It’s tough engaging both. Took me forever to learn to do both.

She also writes her own material, which many pop stars do not. I think she’ll be around for awhile, and this performance is timed right- it is going to give her career a major boost (as if she really needed it)

Wow! If there had been no mention of the singer, I wouldn’t have guessed her real identity. Not in a million years! I have listened to her Alejandro song, which didn’t need a great voice imho and I thought that was all she could do. I didn’t like her showing off, it seemed to me like a modern way of imitating the shocking ’80ies Madonna – sorry! I had seen her briefly in some action movie, never watched

I’m home with the flu, so this waiting for a trailer is not what the doctor recommended. But, fortunately, my GOT colouring book arrived, and its unexpectedly soothing. It’s been my first time colouring since my art classes when I was a teenager. If I had to comment upon the book, I would have liked less sigils and more characters to colour, but you can have them all.

Yes january was very intense because of exams but also it’s nothing compare to next May in which i have my highly anticipated entrance exam for master’s degree and i’m telling you it’s scaring the hell outta me, i failed last year unfortunately so don’t wanna fail again. What’s even worse is that the exam is slated two weeks after start of season 6 and i hate it, i probably going to catch up with the show from episode 3. FOR CHRISSAKES IT’S THE NEXT SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES WE’RE TALKING ABOUT HERE, ok i’ll shut up now.

It looks like the HBO schedule goes six weeks forward, which means we should know the name of the first episode on the 13th of March or thereabouts, if the names are not released earlier. It’s one date you can add to your calendar with some confidence, since we still don’t know for sure when we get the trailer or even any kind of S6 photos or footage.
