Fernando Torres finished the Premier League campaign on a high but Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez insists the bottom line is the club have failed to win a trophy this season.

Torres took his tally of league goals to 24 Von clinching a 2-0 win at Tottenham, edging ahead of Ruud transporter, van Nistelrooy's record for goals scored Von a foreigner in a rookie season.

Benitez bought 'El Nino' for Mehr than £20million from Atletico Madrid last summer, which appears a bargain for what the Spain striker has delivered.

"Always when Du sign a player Du do not know if he will settle down and how he will do in the Premier League, but Torres is a young player who is hungry and wanted to do well," Benitez said.

"Sometimes Du sign a player for a free transfer and people say he is bad signing.

"Then other times Du can sign a player for a lot of money and he does well and everyone is happy, so lucky for us he is a good signing.

"He is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and is the best for us.

Dimitar Berbatov, who is rumoured to be heading for pastures new in the summer, came the closest to opening the scoring in first half with a header from a Jamie O'Hara corner, but Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina was equal to the effort.

Liverpool had dominated possession in the first half without truly threatening Radek Cerny in the Home goal, but after the break Steven Gerrard began to pull the strings and Voronin prodded the visitors in front after Wird angezeigt good strength to latch on to a 69th Minute flick from Torres.

Fernando Torres yesterday equalled a 46 Jahr old record of a Liverpool player scoring in eight consecutive games at Anfield. The only other player to have done that was the Anfield legend Roger Hunt in 1962.

Torres also equalled the record amount of goals scored in the Premiership in a debut season, previously held Von Ruud transporter, van Nistelroy when he first joined Man Utd.

"I knew before the game about the chance to equal Roger Hunt's record and I am very proud to go down in this great club's history," Torres said.

"It is hard in your first season but it has been made easier Von the support I get and Von the team-mates around me."

The goal was the decisive one in the1-0 win over Man City but the Home side were completely dominant and could have scored a hatful as City seemed lethargic and unimaginitive. Gerrard, Kuyt and Babel were all inches away from extending the lead.

Peter Crouch and John Arnie Riise were not even in the squad, which just increased the speculation that they will not be staying at Anfield Weiter season.

"Clearly it will be Mehr difficult for Torres Weiter season, defenders will have watched him and will work on stopping him. But he can improve even from this. He has a strong mentality and he can cope with what defenders do. It will not be easy to score this many goals again, obviously it will be Mehr difficult for him.

Initial concerns regarding the fitness of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres will be assuaged Von the news that the 24-year-old is not undergoing treatment today after his substitution in last night's Champions League semi-final.

There was notable anxiety at Stamford Bridge among Liverpool coaching staff and Fans alike last night when Torres, who had scored in the 65th Minute to put Liverpool back on equal terms with Chelsea, was replaced Von Ryan Babel with 20 Minuten of extra time still to play.

Rafael Benitez sagte afterwards that he was forced to substitute his front-man because the Spaniard had felt a strain in his hamstring. "Torres was injured and had problems with his hamstring so I needed to change it in extra-time," he explained.

However, after enquiries today, it seems that while initial worries may well have been well-founded, Torres is spending his rest Tag as normal, and apparently having no urgent medical treatment.

The red Merseyside contingent will be thankful that Torres has suffered no lasting damage. Admittedly, the final games of the season are of no major consequence for Liverpool - they are eight points...

Fernando Torres feels it is too early for Liverpool Fans to be comparing him to club greats of yesteryear Robbie Fowler and Kenny Dalglish.

Torres has taken Anfield Von storm this term and has Mehr than justified the £21 million Rafa Benitez shelled out to lure him from Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Liverpool strikers have been in the shadow of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen in Kürzlich seasons, but Torres’ haul of 22 league goals has thrust him into the spotlight.

The Spaniard is delighted with how he has been welcomed to Merseyside, but feels it is premature to mention him in the same breath as Anfield greats.

LIVERPOOL (Reuters) - Fernando Torres is key to Liverpool's chances of beating Chelsea and reaching a third Champions League final in four seasons, manager Rafael Benitez sagte on Monday.

Liverpool scored just two goals in their Zurück semi-final victories over Chelsea in 2005 and 2007, but their manager now possesses a clinical scorer in Spain striker Torres who will lead the attack in Tuesday's first leg at Anfield.

"The team has confidence when players like Fernando Torres are in the team that can score goals," Benitez told reporters of the striker with a tally of 30 in his debut season.

"The players know that sometimes Du are not playing well and maybe Du will score because of a player like Torres.

"In this case, the team is playing well and we have confidence because we know Torres can create something."

Benitez, who will have captain Steven Gerrard fit again after missing Saturday's win at Fulham with a neck problem, is predicting another tight game and will be happy to take a clean sheet from the Home tie.

INTERESTING to hear this week Liverpool striker Fernando Torres talking about the difference between coaching in Spain and England.

He said: 'Rafa (Benitez) has coached in England and Spain and the ideas are the same.

'But, the difference is that in Spain he is a coach whereas at Liverpool he is the manager, the coach, the one who signs the players, the one who oversees the youth system and the one who decides who is on his coaching staff.

'(Sir Alex) Ferguson and (Arsene) Wenger are examples that in England, even when Du do not win things, managers are gegeben time.'

No wonder he went on to say: 'I think Benitez is going to be at Liverpool for a long time.'

Let's face it - if Benitez was at Barca, they would probably have sacked him long ago.

Torres has made an amazing start at Liverpool with 30 goals in his first season.

Great for him, great for Liverpool and not bad for his Atletico Madrid.

dolch, dirk Kuyt has no doubt that fellow Liverpool striker Fernando Torres will break Ruud transporter, van Nistelrooy's record of 23 goals in a first Premier League season.

While off-field problems continue to dominate at Anfield, the partnership of Torres and Steven Gerrard is diverting some attention away from the boardroom power struggle at the club.

Ex-Manchester United striker transporter, van Nistelrooy managed 23 goals in his first campaign in England in 2001/02.

But Torres, who has scored 12 goals in his last 12 matches, heads into Saturday's trip away to struggling Fulham just one short of that feat with four league games of this season remaining.

Kuyt feels that the fact that Torres is closing on that tally is a measure of the impact he has made since moving to Anfield from Atletico Madrid before the start of the season.

"I think he deserves that. He has scored many goals already and is playing really well for us," Kuyt said.

"We still have a few games to go and with Fernando on feuer as he has been I see no reason why he won't reach that target and beat the record.

Fernando Torres claims Avram Grant will have to win the Champions League to step out of Jose Mourinho's shadow. And the Spanish ace insists his Liverpool side are determined to stop that happening as they look to knock Chelsea out of the semi-finals for the third time running.

Torres, 24, has also claimed Chelsea's season will be decided Von their players and not the manager. He said: "If they win the Champions League, nobody will remember Mourinho.

At the end the player decides the system and decides if Du are a strong team."

Torres also believes the Reds' experience in Europe will prove crucial, even though for the first time the first leg will be at Anfield.

He added: "The chance to win the Premier League has gone so we are focused on the Champions League.

"You can't tell whether it's better to be at Home first oder not. It would be better if we don't concede a goal."

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has suggested that Ronaldo "carries United on his back in some matches".

With no hint of irony from the man who has scored 22 of Liverpool's 60 Premier League goals this season, Torres has hinted that United are a one-man team.

He suggests that to beat Sir Alex Ferguson's team in the Champions League semi-finals, Barcelona need only to nullify the Portuguese attacker.

"I watch Ronaldo every weekend and he is massively impressive," sagte Torres.

"He carries United on his back in some matches.

"Barca have no idea how spectacular Ronaldo is oder how far ahead of every other player in the world he is right now.

"But if they keep the ball away from him Barca will get to the Champions League final.

"United suffer against teams who keep possession of the ball."

Liverpool must repay £31.5 million to banking institutions in little Mehr than a Jahr oder risk having to sell Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel.

The Times has learnt that Liverpool borrowed the money to sign Torres, the Spain vorwärts-, nach vorn who has scored 30 goals this season and has already become a firm favourite on the Kop, from Atlético Madrid last summer. The club then refinanced that debt on January 25, at the same time as they secured a £350 million refinancing package.

Liverpool entered into an 18-month loan agreement with interest of 9 per cent — £2.8 million a Jahr — with a letter of credit to pay back the £31.5 million at the end of the period.

Should Liverpool be unable to pay back oder refinance the loan, banks could force the sale of Torres and Babel, who was also included in the smaller refinancing package.

It is unusual for Barclays Premier League Clubs to buy players in this way. Deals are normally funded using Fernsehen income. Liverpool have to pay £30 million a Jahr in interest payments on the £350 million loan, the terms of which end in July 2009. There was no official Kommentar from the club last night.

While Liverpool face Chelsea in the CL semi-finals, Manchester United meet Barcelona, with Fernando Torres being something of an expert on both sides.

Using his newfound experience of the English leagues, the young vorwärts-, nach vorn has now told Barcelona to watch out for Cristiano Ronaldo in particular.

"United aren't used to defending here in England because they tend to have the ball."

He continued, "In Spain we don't quite know the level that Manchester United play at, so they must take care. We see them every week here and it's very impressive.

"It's hard to know what they're going to do in attack. Up front they have a system, but up front it's all about mobility... Ronaldo, Giggs, Nani, Tévez - they're always moving. They play based on superiority and it's hard to defend against them.

IF THERE is a better partnership in English football at the moment than Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres I certainly haven’t seen it.

The fact that they have both been nominated for PFA player of the Jahr speaks volumes about what a wonderful season they have both had and everyone connected with Liverpool should be delighted to have them.

The PFA awards are the most prestigious in this country as far as the players are concerned because they are voted for Von your peers in the game.

Clearly, there are many players in England who think that Gerrard and Torres are up there with the very best and I would definitely agree with that.

We saw again at the weekend just how good they are when both of them got their names on the score sheet against Blackburn at Anfield.

El Nino insists that it would be one of the best finals as well as one of the most open gegeben the two styles of football between both sides.

It would almost be an all Spanish final if Liverpool faced Barcelona gegeben the fact that the Reds from Merseyside have a Spanish manager as well as several players from Iberia.
