after last weekend’s finale, you probably have no idea where the show is going next season. Well, apparently that open slate was constructed on purpose.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, departing

showrunner Dave Erickson discussed the big bang at the end of Season 3, and how that sets up the new showrunners, Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg as they take over for Season 4.

“Strictly in terms of plot, and who survives and doesn’t survive? It was designed in a way to leave the door open so the new guys can do what they want to do,” said Erickson.

Still, Erickson had bigger plans for the Clark family down the road, especially Madison, and her possible evolution into a Negan-like character.

“The thing that’s interesting to me, and one of the questions I asked myself and asked Robert Kirkman very [early] on was of the people in our group, who do you see becoming the Governor? Of our group, who could become a Negan? That’s interesting to me, to watch an evolution of a character and start with them as a hero, and bleed that into antihero, and bleed that into full-on villain. It would have been interesting. In terms of the final conflict within the family, it would have been key. For me, there’s a lot left for Madison specifically,” said Erickson.

So, yes, the events at the Gonzalez dam certainly leave things open, but that doesn’t mean the story lines created thus far aren’t in need of tying up. As Erickson told us: “…There are things that are set up in Season 3 for which I had ideas for Season 4, so it will be exciting and wild to watch what the new guys do with it.”
