Clean-cut high-schooler olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) agrees to pretend that she Lost her virginity to her gay friend, Brandon (Dan Byrd). Several boys learn what she has done and beg her to perform the same service for them, hoping to gain some of her newfound fame. This eventually turns into a full-fledged business, lucrative and socially beneficial for Olive, enough so to gain the ire of her rival, Marianne (Amanda Bynes), who doesn't like the attention she's getting. Marianne therefore starts a string of rumors in order to bring down Olive's reputation and force her to leave the school. Olive's life begins to resemble that of Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. olive then decides to use the rumors to her own advantage, affixing a red A to her clothing in reference to the embattled heroine of the novel.
