A Rating of Disney Sidekicks

Through Disney movies, we have been introduced to some of the most classic heroes and villains of all time. But those great characters are nothing without a sidekick next to them. Some sidekicks are incredibly helpful and stay next their mentors. Others mean well but fall a bit short. We’ve decided to rank some of our favorites on a zero to ten scale based on their helpfulness, loyalty, and smarts. We know some of these may be controversial, but we’re just calling it as we see it.

Baymax is literally programmed to be the ideal sidekick. He is kind-hearted and always thinking of others. He is open to learning new things as well; all you have to do is open his access port and insert a new chip.

Slinky Dog has been there for Woody since the day he was unboxed. He’s got a warm heart, is kind,knows right from wrong, and stands by his friend’s side, even through troubled times.

The true heroes of the story. Let’s think about this for a minute, Prince Phillip doesn’t really do anything until that final battle, and Aurora is sleeping half the time. They really don’t get the credit they deserve.

Phil can have a bit of a temper and is slow to jump on the Hercules bandwagon, which knocks him down a few points. However, without Phil, Hercules wouldn’t have gained the confidence needed to become the hero he was destined to be.

He is huggable. He is musical. He is brave. He’s truly got all the bare necessities a sidekick could need.

This Junior Wilderness Explorer is ready and willing to help Carl on every step of their journey. Yes, he can be a bit much sometimes. Yes, he gets on Carl’s nerves at times. Yes, he and Dug have about the same attention span. But he means well and we love him for that.

After Simba faces a devastating tragedy at such a young impressionable age, Timon and Pumbaa are there to nurture the future king. Teaching him how to live life out on his own, the duo vows to help Simba throughout his life, even if that means becoming live bait for a rabid pack of hyenas. But sometimes Timon shuts down Pumbaa’s thoughts and ideas, even though they may be better than his own. In-fighting will get you nowhere on this list.

Mushu is a constant moral support and comic relief, but beyond that, he can’t really do much. He means so well; he’s just not big enough to make a real difference. We appreciate him nonetheless. And his humor definitely earns him a couple points.

Abu is loyal, but he also has a few major flaws. Mainly, he is a kleptomaniac who continually gets his best friend into loads of trouble. But without that trouble, we would never meet Genie. So we’ll give him a pass on that.

Kronk is fantastic. Don’t get us wrong. We love Kronk. But he never really helps Yzma pull off any of her diabolical schemes. Thankfully.

Again, Flounder is a great guy. Nothing against him. His fearful disposition makes it difficult for him to provide anything but moral support. Which is important, but Ariel could have used a friend with more initiative.

We know we may catch some heat for this one, but hear us out. Tinker Bell is almost an anti-sidekick. She continually hinders Peter’s plans and wishes, she has a jealousy problem, and she is kiiiind of a backstabber. Yes, she helps the Darling children fly, but she didn’t really want to. While we love her as a character, for the purposes of this list, she has to rank towards the bottom.

The Gargoyles serve as comic relief, but they can’t really go anywhere or do anything outside of the balcony of Notre Dame. Then there’s the fact that they may be a figment of Quasimodo’s imagination. We love imaginary friends, but great sidekicks they are not.

As First Mate for the notorious Captain Hook, you would think Mr. Smee would be a very cunning and brave pirate. Nope. He falls for Peter disguising his voice and doesn’t even know how to properly shave Captain Hook. Jolliness – 10, though.

LeFou gets to sing one of this writer’s favorite songs in Disney history, but after that, he is rather bumbling. Gaston surely keeps him around because he loves someone hanging on his every word.

Buddy is the worst! He wants to be Mr. Incredible’s sidekick … so he becomes a Supervillain!? No. That’s not how sidekicks work, Buddy.
