I know I'm going to catch a lot of flack for this, but...

I never thought that Ariel was a very good role model. She lusts after a guy she doesn't know, and puts him above her own family. It doesn't seem to bother her very much to just bargain away her voice so she can get legs, giving up her ability to be with her family. All for a guy that she only really glanced at once up to that point. She doesn't teach very good family values IMO.

Mermaid-Tail picked Aschenputtel:
Even though I agree Ariel's not the best role model I want to say in her defence she didn't really pick Eric over her family. She wanted to live on land before knowing he existed. She wanted out of the sea regardless of Eric's existence, so it was less picking Eric over her family and more her picking personal happiness and not wanting her father to control where she could live and what she did that motivated her wanting to leave the sea. I don't think moving away from your family to somewhere you'll be happier is a bad example, and she could still visit (disregarding the 2nd movie which I stubbornly refuse to consider official). I agree she's not the best role model, for things like giving up her voice for a man she didn't know, not thinking things through and being immature. I just don't think it's completely accurate to say she chose Eric over her family when the main issue Triton had wasn't specifically anything to do with who Eric was as a person, it was the living on land thing, which was something Ariel wanted a long time before knowing Eric.

I'm going with Cinderella. In some ways, like her kindness, she sets a good example, it's just that her movie carries with it the idea that nice people let others abuse them and treat them badly, because being sweet means letting people walk all over you. Like I said, in some ways she was a good example too though.

you make a good point about Ariel though. I hate when everyone thinks that she left the water for Eric, and they forget that she'd wanted to be on land waaaay before she saw Eric. Anyways, all the princesses are good role modle sfor some things
Snow White-eternal optimism
Cinderella-eternal hope
Ariel-determination
Belle-understanding
Jasmine-not letting others control her
Pocahontas- loads of things
Mulan-bravery
Tiana-independence

Aurora...I just can't think of anything

She's not the best role model, but she's better than Snow White and Aurora, in my opinion at least...
Edit:Btw I think they're all great role models, and a lot of mothers who are concerned with them being bad ones aren't looking at the fact that little girls don't like boys yet. Therefore they do not want their prince to come. The princesses are all nice and kind, and that stands out much more...

I dont think any of them are really bad but I've always thought Ariel was motivated by selfishness.

Mermaid-Tail picked Aschenputtel:
ppv, some reasons people seem to find her a bad rolemodel are she fell in love in a day (at most), going by her song it was because she saw the guy in a dream with no knowledge of his personality(I personally find that ok, since it's a fairytale I think love at first site's ok in that kind of story, but others don't) she talks to a stranger and tells him where she lives, even though the faries spent her whole life telling her not to do exactly that, when she finds out she can never see the man she loves again she doesn't even try to fight or argue, she just cries and lets people force her to marry a complete stranger (she didn't know it would turn out to be Philip, but still went along with it with no arguement) she didn't even have enough of a mind of her own to put up a slight arguement against people forcing her to do things she desperately didn't want to. She just quietly cried while people controled her in ways she was miserable with.

I do like Aurora a lot, but I understand people thinking she's a bad role model.

jemgrl323 picked Ariel:
i think most of them (not all of them though) do not make good role models.

i like ariel...and i love the movie the little mermaid. but it bothers me how inconsiderate she can be at times. she disregards things her father says even though it means a lot to him (like completely blowing off the concert [was it a concert?] in her honor at the beginning of the movie). she completely ignores what sebastian tells her throughout the movie and she endangers flounder's life numerous times. i love ariel- but she acts very immature and does not consider other people when making her desicisons. her curiousity and determination are admirable... but the way she displays these characteristics are less than admirable.

unlike other people- i have no problem with ariel's love for eric... disney stories are all about love at first sight (i do have a slight problem with eric's love for ariel... but that's a different story). at least ariel loves a man that is kind to her...unlike belle who embraces an abusive relationship.

Mongoose09 picked Ariel:
I agree with jemgrl323.

And princesslullaby, I know that she didnt want to go to land because of a guy. I know she wanted to go to land before she saw Eric and Eric only reinforced her opinion and made it stronger. But at the end of the day, she made an agreement with the Seawitch (aka devil basically) about Eric. She completely disregarded her family and friends and in my opinion that's inconsiderate as family is the most important thing in the world for me and its not as if her family was horrible or anything. It wasnt like her family were like Cinderella's - her family was fine. Yeah, her dad was controlling and needed to go to anger management classes, but overall she had many friends and family that she could spend time with. But instead, she chose to go to land where she might not even succeed in the job she was given. I just think it was careless really. What if Eric or his family happened to be horrible people and ended up keeping her prisoner and abusing her, etc? I just think it's selfish.

My other choice would be Aurora.

Mermaid-Tail picked Aschenputtel:
I agree about love at first sight being fine from a fairytale. Others disagree, but I'm personally fine with it.

I sort of agree that in the time Aurora comes from it would be more historically accurate for her to agree without argument, but really since Aurora was raised away from society by three women, she'd probably be far more untouched than most women of her day by ideas of sexism or women having no say over their lives, so it doesn't quite excuse her. With no contact with the outside world where would she get the idea that women didn't control their own choices in those days, or that royalty didn't have freedom to marry who they wished? It wouldn't be ingrained in her the same way it woul be for most women of the time.
Also, we're judging them outside the context of the time their movies are set in. For her time it was normal, but for girls watching today it does stop her being a good role model (well, that's a matter of opinion I suppose), even if it's accurate :)

What would make her think she wouldn't see them again? The spell was only for 3 days. If she'd got her kiss (which she was assuming she would) she could have told sebastian and Flounder to let her family know where she was right away. With Triton's powers it would be very easy for her to visit her family living on land, so from her point of view she was only leaving them breifly. Not saying she wasn't stupid, it was naive of her to assume everything would work out in only 3 days, and beyond stupid to trust Ursula, I just think her problem was less being selfish and more being kind of dim and no savvy enough to catch on to the clearly shifty Ursula. She didn't think she was giving up her family, or even being away too long, so I guess from her point of view leaving them worrying for 3 days was worth winning the life she'd wanted for years and had no other way of getting.
I agree she didn't have it that bad, but you don't have to have a terrible life to justify seeking happiness.

Even though I'm kind of standing up for her I actually do agree she was short-sighted, dumb and extremely naive, and understand people thinking she's a bad role model. I'll be voting for her in this countdown pretty soon myself. I just consider her faults to be in different areas than some people. Just my opinion though, and I understand people disagreeing :)

Jessicatt picked Ariel:
^ When Ursula tells her that she can give her legs, Ariel says, "If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again", to which Ursula responds, "That's right, but you'll have your man."
It seems like she did realize she wouldn't see her family again, and picked Eric (and living on land) over them anyway.

I don't really see why Aurora has so many votes. She fell in love at first sight, but so did many of the other princesses. I don't think that she's the best role model, but I certainly don't think that she's the worst either.

^^I voted Aurora because she simply didn't do anything. At least Ariel can be admired for her determination.

I don't see Ariel as being selfish. She had expressed to her father many times about wanting to go to land. He ignored her, so her only choice was to do it behind his back. Do you think if she had went up to him and said "I'll be going to be a human now, but I'll still visit you guys", he'd have let her go? No. And if she told him where she was you can be sure he would have turned her back into a mermaid. So no, I don't think she was being selfish.

Mermaid-Tail picked Aschenputtel:
I'd actually forgot she said that about never seeing her family again. I guess the only reason for her to think she wouldn't see them again is if she thought he'd be so mad he'd stop talking to her, which she should have known he wouldn't, he clearly loved her a lot. He had just screamed at her but still. I don't see any other reason she'd think she wouldn't see him, so I guess if that's what she thought I still wouldn't really call it selfish, if one of my parents wouldn't support me going for the life I wanted, even knowing I was unhappy, I can't see giving up my dreams to appease them. (edit: actually doesn't she say 'be with' not 'see' anyway? because that could make it a different sentiment entirely, it could be about giving up that life, and not getting to live among them any more, rather than not getting to actually see them)

Even though I'm a fan I still think she's a dope though (don't get me started on it never occuring to her to write down who she is for Eric. We know she can read and write, we see her do both)
I might like Ariel's character, but I'm not rooting for her in this poll, I like her but she's at best pretty ditzy.

I don't think it's selfish because I think it's unfair to expect someone to be unhappy their whole life to appease their family. Spending your life miserable because your family want to choose your path for you isn't selfless, it's pointless. To a certain point you have to prioritise your own happiness, otherwise what's the point of living? I agree what she did was stupid, irresponsible and short sighted, but I don't think the reason she left, or her wanting to leave was selfish. She not the only princess to prioritise happiness in that way. Pocahontas' father told her to stay away from all the people like John Smith but she snuck off anyway, Jasmine refused suitors and tried to run away, Aurora told a stranger where she lived without thinking (something she'd been repeatedly warned against, for all she knew she was endangering the fairies lives but she didn't care).

I feel weird defending Areil when I agree she should be voted off, if not now then soon. I don't think this spot has room for any more loony Ariel fans :P

I absolutely agree with Mermaid-Tail.

I was just thinking, then why isn't Pocahontas being voted off, or Jasmine, who both ran away from their fathers wen being told not to? Especially Jasmine, she was gonna run away for good, just like Ariel, but was captured by the guards. And Jasmine was also running away from royal responsibilities, she was going to be queen! That's the only reason why she wasn't going to come back. It's such a double standard.

And I'm not just saying that as an Ariel fan. I just think that although Ariel made mistakes, she also did good things too that can be admired. Whereas Aurora did nothing at all. I do think Ariel should be voted off soon, just not before Aurora, whose only rule was to not talk to strangers, and she did just that, when it could've been Maleficent or someone evil she was talking to, she wouldn't know.

Yeah, I sort of agree with your points Mermaid-Tail and you have a very good argument. But with the other Princesses it isn't the same. Well, I don't see it as the same anyway? They weren't going to other worlds, they were just being a bit mischevious and careless. Whereas with Ariel, I do think it's selfish whether she intended it to be or not. She obviously didnt mean to be selfish, sometimes we cant help our actions. But she made a deal with the devil (Ursula xD) that if her plan didnt succeed then she wouldve become one of those ugly things that live with Ursula (sorry I dunno what theyre called?) and then she wouldve had hardly any chance at all about seeing her family again. Her family werent even that bad - well the dad was kinda - but at least he loved her and was only doing what he thought was best for her. She had other family and friends who she could spend time with aswell, and she gave up her life basically just because of a stupid man? Yeah I understand that she wanted to live on land BEFORE she saw Eric, but the agreement with Ursula involved Eric, so ultimately it was about him. And to be honest, I find that selfish, because her family wouldve worried about her. 3 days without seeing their daughter? Maybe even forever? With the other princesses, it was a matter of 2 hours or so (Except Aurora, but thats different as I dont believe shes a good role model anyway lol, shes my next choice) but with Ariel it was 3 days - and if she didnt succeed (which is very likely that she wouldnt, but as its disney she did) - then she wouldve never seen or spoken to her family again.. surely they would worry about her? Yeah, her intentions weren't selfish but making her family worry for her safety and her life IS selfish in my opinion. I know many disagree with me but it's what I believe.

On the Ariel thing I sit somewhere in the middle. She did some things that could be seen as selfish, but I think her main problem was just that she did things without thinking. She goes to Ursula while still in a huff with her Father and immediately signs a contract I'm pretty sure she didn't even try to read. I'd say most of her selfish acts were less the main problem and more an accidental symptom of her impulsiveness. Like it's not that she didn't care about upsetting her family, she just didn't even think about the consequences to realise it would happen.

Also, I want to point out something magical. A countdown poll where Snow White isn't being voted off first. Only 13 percent as of now. Good for her :)
