I find it ridiculous when someone HATES Ariel (or any disney princess) because none of them have done anything so terrible to deserve hate. They may do some stuff you disagree with and you may not be fond of them but to actively hate them I think is always an overreaction. Ariel is harshly criticized, absolutelybut has plenty of people who stick up for her. I would say Merida is treated worse. posted Vor mehr als einem Jahr.

I love that she's basically living in a society that is racist toward humans, so to speak and she's the one who goes against that and sees beyond all that. In the 3rd movie, you find out why Triton doesn't like or trust humans and honestly for good reason. The love of his life is dead more so because of her poor choices. She honestly should have left the music box. She wouldn't have died. But he blames them. Ariel looks beyond that and falls in love with one. 	UnholyNoise picked Sort of yes, sort of no.: most of the stuff people say about ariel is true. she is dumb and spoiled and selfish: trusts someone with a known reputation for screwing people over. still couldn't anticipate or plan for being screwed over. it's always about what she wants, irrespective of her friends' and family's concerns. but then they're supposed to bail her out when she eventually gets in over her head. and the narrative rewards her for all of it. she ends up learning nothing and never has to rework her values or ambitions, even when they hurt others and get her into trouble. the criticism that she's just in it for a man is batshit, though - ariel's a land weeb and would be one even without eric. i don't think she gets enough credit for her ambition being tied to genuine curiosity and admiration for a culture other than her own despite being raised to hate/fear humans. posted Vor mehr als einem Jahr. last edited Vor mehr als einem Jahr

I understand a lot of the criticism she gets, and a lot of people are reasonable with it, but she can also attract obsessive hatred which is a bit much - I never realised how much people can hate selfishness until I saw Ariel and Merida discussed on here!
