I think most of you know who Katy Perry is, but in case you don't SHE is a singer who sings 'I kissed a GIRL' When her song first came out, I avoided it; plugging my ears and humming to myself or turning off the radio for a few minutes. Then my friends (who are Christians 2) started to sing it, but I didn't join in at all. I just got used to the song. Now I listen to it when it comes on. she has a new one called 'Hot and Cold' and I don't see anything in there that is Anti-Chritian, except for a word in the beginning, but it's usuallly bleeped out. Should I continue to listen to Katy (as long as I don't actually KISS a girl, or anything) or is it Anti-Christian, ungodly, and therefore wrong?

If I can share some guidelines I use for myself, I would share, "All things are permissible for me, but not all things are beneficial." (1 Cor.6:12)

Our thoughts, what we watch, and what we listen to are all seeds we are sowing in our heart. The type of seeds we sow determine what the fruit of our lives will be. So if God's highest aspirations for me is to restore me into the image of Christ, I want to do everything possible not to hinder His work in my life.

It is the everyday, seemingly "little" decisions that determine the closeness of our relationship with God.
Finally, "whatever is true, whatever is noble whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." Phil.4:8

If you're asking, it's a good sign you are already sensing something in your spirit. If you are in Christ, His Spirit is in you. God delights in a heart sensitive to Him!

Hi...I´m new in fanpop, and i am not even a very "active" christian, but i must tell you that i never really liked this song. Not because i´m a racist or anything, but because i think its ridiculous that a singer needs to sing "i kissed a girl and i liked" to be recognized as a good singer and reach success!!
This days i even listen to it, cause its almost impossible not to (it plays everywhere) but i still have my beliefs!! :)

and MissBoredom I agree with you completely. Two of my favorite songs are 'Forever' by Chris Brown and 'Mad' by Neyo. I am 95% sure that these songs have no bad language or references in them. They are good songs (and if they AREN'T, like they have language or sensuality or something else I missed, then please tell me IMMEDIATELY) Anyway, they are good songs and they are successful artists. You don't need to go against God's Word to be successful, and I like Neyo and Chris for proving that, though it is uncertain whether they are Christians themselves.

And I am proud to admit that I have gone back to my old radio station when Katy Perry comes on. I listen to it for a few minutes then cautiously turn the other station back on. Usually it is OK music. I have avoided 'I Kissed A Girl' three times in the past week. Sometimes I don't even turn on the radio at all.

Even if you consider homosexuality as a sin, listening to a song that involves it is not, in my opinion, sinful. You don't have to avoid it. You can even like the music, if you want.

My logic for this comes from the Bible: Jesus walked and surrounded himself with sinners. As harold always so eloquently states, we all fall short of the glory of god. Most songs out there are about something sinful, whether it be lust, greed, or, well, homosexuality. But so long as you keep to the road that you believe to be righteous, then that's the important thing. You can surround yourself with sinners, listen to their music, just stick to your own beliefs.

These things that people sing about, these songs you avoid if they aren't completely G-rated, or they aren't about "true love", are songs about life. Sin is a big part of life. At some point, you will feel these feelings some of these songs are about, and it's about whether or not you act on them. You don't have to avoid every "non-christian" song. You don't have to listen solely to christian music. It's OK to like a song like "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" or even "I Kissed a Girl," if the music appeals to you. It's about your actions-- not what you listen to.

Ahh...but see, so much of the time it's not "just entertainment". Everything around us - books, movies, music, magazines, the media - everything has a message. Everything has something to say to us. If you get too comfortable with the wrong messages, especially if you're a confused, hormonal teenager, they can influence your life, the choices you make and the actions you take. Sometimes you can't listen to their music without straying from your faith.

Obviously it's not an immediate thing. "Oooh, Katy Perry kissed a girl. I think I'll kiss one, too!" No, not like that. It's the quiet, subtle, little things that creep in and gradually take hold. It's like the boiled frog experiment.

I'd also like to point out something: Yes, Jesus hung out with sinners and reached out to them. But did He encourage their behavior or say that what they were doing was okay? No. "Go and sin no more." That was the command.

And yes, sin is a big part of life. Does that make it right? Does that mean we should drink it in? Should we ignore it or encourage it? No. As Christ-followers, we are called to be "in the world, not of the world." We are called to be different for Jesus; to uphold what is right and be an example for everyone. How can we possibly be that example if we're constantly soaking in what the world tells us?

I'm not saying that every secular song is bad and shouldn't be listened to. I enjoy lots of secular music myself. And I'm not saying we should all seal ourselves in plastic bubbles and not confront the less-than-pure side of life, either. But you need to be careful. What goes in your head will tuck itself in a little corner of your heart and find its way out again. If what you're watching and hearing doesn't fit the Phillipians 4:8 glove, chances are you don't need it. Either find something better, or proceed with caution. Don't ever let go of your sword, and be sure you have every piece of God's armor securely in place.

I actually use to do the same thing when the song came on, plug my ears, change the station, hum over it, anything really, it was vulgar and my cousin always sung it around me, I started to get annoyed with her for being so, well for being so the majority of the population. I'm a Christian and the song wasn't my cup of tea, but I listened to an interview of Katy Perry where she said that she hasn't kissed a girl and she was just going with what people wanted to hear, she also said something that stuck, she said "atleast I'm not singing about licking lolipops" if you've never heard of that song, and its metaphor within the lyrics, well lets just say don't go googling it. Anyways, as a Christian sure I didn't like the song, but I don't think your doing anything wrong by listening to a song. But see I listen to a variety of song, from cursing, and sex induendos in the lyrics, but I don't feel as if I'm doing anything wrong, because I don't apply it to my life in anyway, I like music and if I find a song catchy its catchy. Its not going to change me in anyway. I think if you don't feel as if the song is affecting your choices then go ahead and continue to listen, but if you feel as if it is, and that you're becoming more distant from the lord then I suggest stop listening to it.

My mom says that saying we like the beat of a song is just an excuse for us sinning. And to a point I agree, but I think that its what your feeling on the inside and thinking, are you getting some werid kick out of a song when its wrong, or is it just you like the song. I don't let songs, lyrics, movies, books or anything affect my relationship with god or what I choose to do in my life. So listening to "I Kissed A Girl" or "Hot'N Cold" is fine by me. I prefer "Hot'N Cold" it sounds better to my ears, and I can sing it without wanting to change the lyrics. Also if you continue to feel iffy about listening to "I Kissed A Girl" you could always not listen to it, OR change the lyrics like my sister and I did

"I kissed a boy and I liked it, the taste of his cherry chapstick"

Guys wear chapstick too. lol.

I hear what you're saying. And I agree that there are messages and points to just about everything in the media. Still, just by listening to her music, I don't believe you're necessarily condoning the lifestyle.

That said, I also (personally) believe that homosexuality isn't a choice. If you're not gay, listening to songs or watching shows with gay characters in it isn't going to make you gay, no matter what. If you have both gay and straight tendencies (bisexual) and believe that your gay tendencies are sinful and want to focus on your straight side, then maybe you should avoid temptation like that. But otherwise, listening to the song neither condones the lifestyle, nor will it lead you (most likely) to experimentation, especially if you, personally, are firm in your beliefs against it.

For example, my brother, when he was younger, went through a phase of listening to Eminem, whose songs can be quite violent. But my brother is not a violent individual. He never acted out, nor did he ever WANT to act out the lyrics of any of those songs. We watch violent movies, murder mysteries, crime shows-- but we don't go out and kill anyone.

I also understand the need to avoid temptation and keep away from the devil, as it were. And I fully support people sticking to the path that they feel is the right one for them. Still, I don't believe that means closing yourself off to the messages in the media. I think that has the potential to lead to closed-mindedness and an unwillingness to listen to any point of view that is not your own.

Hearing people out, listening to these messages, thinking about them and why they are wrong (for you personally) are important to finding and defining your faith. Be wary of the messages, sure. I'm not saying be gullible and believe everything you hear, I'm just saying think about what you're hearing. Even if you don't like it, it'll reaffirm your faith.

You can, and should, strive to be like Jesus Christ. He is a great role model to aspire to, no matter what your faith. Be in the world, stick to your values, and hold to what's true to yourself. But that quote... "not of the world"... Again, I feel the potential to separate yourself from other human beings that way. I am very much of the world, which is where I find my empathy and urge to help others of this world. I'm no better than them, and they are no better than me. Don't fight the world, and all its sin, ugliness and careless lechery. Fight for the world, and its beauty and humanity and grace.

And don't avoid a sticky situation just because your hands might get a little dirty. Remember-- you can always wash them clean again if you're strong in your faith.

In my opinion, if you're going to let this song bother you, then a lot of other songs should bother you. Do you plug your ears when a song about cheating on a boyfriend comes on? About sex? About drugs? About lying? Probably not.
So long as we understand that music (books, movies, etc) are entertianment, then I don't see the harm.

Then again, to each his own.

But I would advise against cherry chapstick. It really doesn't taste all that good after a while.

I haven't heard the song 'I Kissed A Girl'. And I don't plan on it. It's so against in what I believe in. Homosexuality is a mortal sin. God says so in the Holy Bible. Even if you believe in Jesus you would still go to hell if you live that kind of life. It's in the Holy Bible. period

Well. Not trying to be judgy. But yeah I believe homosexualality IS a sin. The Bible says it CLEARLY. It says a lot of things cleary, but people tend to add and take away from it. God created a man and a woman in the beginning. That shows me that God INTENDED it to be that way. Otherwise he would've created Adam & Steve. And yes. Oorn IS a sin too.

As for Katie Perry. I think it's sad that she was a christian and turned away. Very tragic.

Don't wanna make this a thing, but...

I know what you're referencing when you say the Bible clearly states homosexuality is a sin (Leviticus being the most often quoted instance of this), and that's true. But to say that God intended heterosexuality because he made Adam and Eve (and not the beloved bumper-sticker quotable couple, "Adam and Steve") is like saying that God intended there to be only one race. From Adam and Eve is where the entire human race sprung: men, women, the myriad of races, heights, body types, facial features and personality types. So why not sexuality? Just because Adam and Eve were the mother and father of the human race does not mean that they gave birth to children who were clones of them.

After all, where do gay people come from if not from straight, heterosexual, parents?

I'm not challenging the "homosexuality is a sin" argument right now because I've been there, I'm just challenging that one, single cliched support of it.
