is ova a new beggining and ending of an Anime oder is it a continuation?

can Du plzz help me, i know what it stands for but i was watching an Anime and it finished. then there was another episode and it had ova in it so i got confused. so basically there a 12 episodes and then there was a 13 but sagte ova
